Comment: Hello,This maybe of interest to your namesake's...
I was educated at the "Bicknell School," Petersfield Road, Boscombe East,
Bournemouth, Hampshire. UK. in the late 1960's.
The school was founded by a "Bessie Bicknell" of Bournemouth in 1967.
I do not know whether Mrs B Bicknell was related to the "Bicknell Company" of
Builders, prominent at the time of the schools founding.
If you require further information please do not hesitate to ask !
Please note, the "Bicknell School" is unaware that I have passed on this
information, therefore I cannot say what their response will be if you make enquires to
them for further historic information.
There is a plaque in the reception area unveiled in 1967 by "Sir Edward Boyle"
on opening day, to which "Bessie Bicknell" was in attendance, as was I.Sir
Edward Boyle went on to become "Lord Boyle" there is a Library at Leeds
University named after him in his honour, a very honourable man by all accounts.

His wife was born Hannah Botterill. Her mother was born Hannah Jackson in Malton,
Yorkshire in about 1833. Her uncle was John Jackson R.A.; her grandfather (through her
mother) was the painter James Ward R.A. - that is, Hannah Jackson's father's brother was
John Jackson. So John Jackson's parents were my great-great-great-great grandparents. Do

Comment: My Grandfather was called George Henry Bicknell and was born in 1907
in the Birmingham area.
Unfortunately his father died in the second world war in 1914 ( we think).
His mother remarried and became a Price. I know that she had 11 children, 2
being Bicknell's and the other 9 being Price.
I am not sure if there is any link, but I would be interested to know.
George Bicknell had two childred called George Henry Bicknell junior born
1935 and David John Bicknell born 1943 ( my father)
My name is Claire Bicknell and my father name is David John Bicknell and married
Jane Anne Bicknell ( nee Cook) in 1970.
I am not sure if this helps, it would be nice to hear of any information if
any about the family,

Comment: I finally found a site worth serious research for
COLONEL GEORGE W. BICKNELL US ARMY in the book "AT DAWN WE SLEPT".
My wife has been 91 year old Dorothy B. Bicknells' evening
companion and house helper for about 24 months. Once in a while I go over and
make emergency outside security lightbulb repairs and such. Mrs. Bicknell is
lively in her mannerisms, talkative and very alert. One day, many months ago
Dorothy pointed to a large photo on the wall where Colonel Bicknell is shaking
hands with a foreign dignitary and she is standing to his side. She comments "
great picture but they cut me out when they inserted the photo in the book AT
DAWN WE SLEPT.
Dorothy explained to my wife how her husband had received to
Legions of Merit and just volumes of other awards and how proud she was of him.
Time passed and we didn't pay too much attention to these old conversations. My
wife and I are still very much aware of this time period, though, since we made
it a special point to visit the Pearl Harbor monument on the 50th Anniversary
and met several of the survivors. These conversations are engrained in our
memory.
I had always wanted to read that book, AT DAWN WE SLEPT , but
was afraid of it's voluminous pages. Frightening!. So on my day off, ( I work at
U.S. Immigration and Immigration Service", I visited the library at Kaneohe
Marine Corps Base. When I started reading this book(-every word-) I was
transformed back to a time and place in Pearl Harbor many years before.
At 56 years of age, I had never been enthralled by history or
studies before except for maybe when I was setting up emergency MARS radio
stations for the Marine Corps at El Toro California, The Ambassador Hotel, the
day Bobby Kenndy was shot, MCAS Iwakuni Japan, Albany Georgia , and Camp Garcia
Vieques IsIand.
One day, I marked a passage on Colonel Bicknell in my book
"SECRETS AND SPIES" BEHIND THE SCENES STORIES OF WORLD WAR II (READERS DIGEST),
and had my wife show it to Dorothy Bicknell. She says, "Oh I know all that. It
happend right in my front room". This is live history now.
Just before you answered my request, I read someones's
statement that Colonel Bicknell was a reserve officer and sort of a rough-tough
sort of guy and he got things done by himself. I thought, how interesting-this
sounded so much like my own character.
Does anyone remember Dorothy B. Bicknell or her late husband
George W. Bicknell?

My rather tenuous connection to Bicknell is Frederick Shoults, a son of Peter
Shoults (1775-1849) who married Jemima Bicknell Back. Jemima's mother was Ann
Bicknell and this family (or rather a branch of it) were related by marriage to
the famous English landscape painter, John Constable RA (1776-1842). I descend
from a brother of Peter Shoults (1775-1849) on my mother's father's side. I
would be interested to find out more about Jemima Bicknell Back's relations and
how exactly she might be related to Maria (Bicknell) Constable, wife of the
painter.

Comment: I now have a 600 plus page book about the Bicknell Family in America
with special emphasis on Zachariah and Catherine Tiffany Bicknell's family who
were in Ashford Connecticut in the early 1700's and who moved from Connecticut
to New York.
It has been six years in the making and I've traveled all over the east coast
for information.
I've updated both the 1913 book and the 1981 book, but have used them liberally

We come from the Selborne, Hants branch, about which I have gathered quite a lot of

We have a Western Australian branch which I have recently contacted.

My 4xgreat-grandfather was a Bicknell, but I haven't managed to trace his origins yet.
John Bicknell married Sarah Stride in Bridgwater 3 Dec 1764. He was a minor, so born after
1743.
His mother was possibly Joan Bicknell, who married (as a widow) George Taylor in
Bridgwater in 1761.
A Christopher and Joan Bicknell had children baptised in B'water Presbyterian Chapel in
1756 and 1758.
I don't know if these were John's parents or his brother and sister-in-law.
Still working on this.
If anyone has come across these Bicknells I should be glad to hear from them.

We have Phyllis' book - very cool.
My 15 minutes of fame came in 1990 when I was the student commencement speaker at
Wellesley College and shared the podium with Barbara Bush and Raisa Gorbachev. It was

Born in maine 1872.he married Annie Kennedy abt 1900. (Annie was born in n.b. in 1873).
They moved to 45 Howard street in Brockton , Mass early 1900's, was still living there in
1933.
This is all the info I have of these people. I'm trying to find out if they had any
children if so , I may be able to find their descendants.

back in 1991.

My grandfather and grandmother came from Switzerland;John(Johann)Schwab b 26/Jun/1861 he
came to US in 1884 and went back to Switzerland around 1915 he re-married there died
1/Jan/1930 and is buried near Cordast,Switzerland.
His 1st wife was Margarete Rosa Abbey b 14/Dec/1869 John's brother Fritz lived at
Zurich;dates unknown.

I was born in New Orleans, LA. My Becnel line research dead-ends with the marriage
certificate of Thomas Becknell and Catherine Bro dated 1742, in Louisiana.
Is it possible that Thomas (whose birthplace is indicated as London, England on the
marriage cert.) descended from one of the Bicknell / Becknell lines.
I spent the last few days in Santa Fe reviewing the information in the vertical files

My mother was a Bicknell (father Francis) and a great Anglophile. She met a Bicknell in
Michigan who owned the Bicknell genealogy and took her home so she could have a look at
it. Unfortunately she was never able to find where her father fit in to the family tree.
She spent many unsuccessful years trying to locate another copy of the book. Too bad she
died (1983) before the cyber age. She would have loved this website.
I have visited Somerset (where there is actually a post office named Bicknell) and tried
to find the two Bicknell chapels illustrated in Sydney Algernon Bicknell's 1900 book
entitled EXCERPTA BICONYLLEA.
The "Old Bicknell Chapel" no longer exists and is now a farmer's field. However,
the old rectory was being renovated at the time and the yard contained many very old
tombstones, generally unreadable by now.
The "New Bicknell Chapel" is now a community center nearby, though the yard is
filled with tombstones. The original manor house (Bikenhulle) is still there, having been
passed on to the Portman family in 1471-72. ThePortman family still owns this very
large manor house as well as much of the land in that area. We tried to meet the Portmans
on our visit, but though we knocked and knocked, no one would come to the door. (Ah,
well.)
If anyone knows of a Francis Bicknell, who possibly had brothers named Orville and/or
Orlando, I would appreciate hearing more about his origins and where he fits in. He
probably would have died around mid-century. Someone thinks he might have been spotted in
Minneapolis at some point, and it is likely he was an artist at the time. (He abandoned my
mother's family when she was very small. Well, all families must have their black sheep.
But
it never destroyed her desire to find out more about her Bicknell past.)
I have bookmarked the website and will check back often. Thanks for the wonderful job.

I am trying to link Dabney Becknell, born in 1780(married to Kathrine Brandon in
1802) to the William Becknell of Amherst, Co.,VA. We are assuming that he is the son

Comments:I just found some long lost Bicknell's:
The four children of Lois Bicknell Alexander.
She had died when the oldest was four and they were sent to orphanages.
I just called the 86 year old delightful son, Micheal and have a great family
history on him...miracles do happen..
